Saara — short for Sociedade de Amigos das Adjacências da Rua da Alfândega — is an open-air shopping district in downtown Rio de Janeiro, built around Rua da Alfândega and eleven surrounding streets. Founded by Syrian and Lebanese merchants who settled near the port a century ago, it now holds hundreds of shops and stalls selling clothing, accessories, party supplies and general merchandise. It is the largest open-air retail-wholesale district in the state of Rio, open Monday to Friday 9–18h and Saturday mornings, near Uruguaiana metro.
The district's strength is broad-line general merchandise at bargain prices: apparel, costume jewellery, party and Carnival supplies, household goods, toys and accessories, sold to street vendors, small shop owners and bargain hunters. Chinese exporters of daily-use goods, festive decorations and small gifts will find a ready reseller network here that complements the 25 de Março circuit in São Paulo. Best visited on weekday mornings; expect bargaining and bulk pricing.
