Barrio Meiggs lies between Santiago's Estación Central rail terminal and the city centre, named after Henry Meiggs, the 19th-century American engineer who built Chile's railways. More than 150 years old, it evolved from railway warehouses into a vast urban wholesale quadrant bounded by Avenida Bascuñán Guerrero, the Alameda, Exposición, Salvador Sanfuentes, Unión Latinoamericana, Sazié and Gorbea streets. It is one of Chile's largest import wholesale districts, with galleries, bodegas and importers supplying entrepreneurs, street vendors and small shops; Metro Line 1's Estación Central and ULA stations are steps away.
Meiggs concentrates imported electronics, phone accessories, hardware and tools, toys, stationery, party supplies, cleaning goods and beauty items — much of it sourced directly from China — sold wholesale to resellers. For Chinese exporters of accessories, small appliances, hardware and toys, it is Chile's archetypal China-goods distribution channel. Choose established galleries on calmer streets such as Salvador Sanfuentes, keep cash small and visits in daytime, as the informal street trade in parts of the district requires normal caution.
