Wekalet el-Balah, commonly known as El Wekala, is an open-air market in the Bulaq district of Cairo and the city's oldest and best-known hub for affordable new and used clothing and piece goods. After decades of trade it became a landmark of Egyptian fashion and textile shopping, offering ready-made garments, recycled clothes, bedding, curtain and furnishing fabrics at prices well below traditional fabric shops, drawing small shop owners and tailors for bulk purchases.
It combines wholesale and retail of new and recycled garments plus bedding and curtain fabrics, and acts as Cairo's price bellwether for affordable clothing and home textiles. Chinese exporters of budget garments, home-textile fabrics and used-clothing sorting equipment can use it to reach Cairo's clothing wholesalers and tailor network. Chinese exporters planning market entry are advised to arrange on-site visits and work with local agents to establish their first working contacts with resident wholesalers.
