Asan Tole, at a six-way junction in old Kathmandu, is Nepal's oldest traditional bazaar and once a trading node on the India-Tibet route. Spices, grain, dry goods and daily necessities are sold in a mix of wholesale and retail, with Newar shopkeepers lining the lanes (shop count to be verified), and the market connects seamlessly with the nearby Indrachowk commercial street.
The bazaar is known for wholesale spices, food grains, dry goods, religious items and household groceries, and remains the traditional source market for retailers in central Nepal's districts. For Chinese exporters of general merchandise, spiced foods, small appliances and gifts and toys, it is suited to meeting Kathmandu wholesalers who reach Nepal's inland trade network, much of which historically runs along the old mountain caravan routes.
