Souq Al Alawi runs through Jeddah's Al-Balad, a UNESCO World Heritage district, and is the old city's oldest and most representative traditional market street. Stretching about one kilometer from the old harbor toward the Makkah Gate, it is lined with shops selling fabric and garments, oud perfumes, spices, dates and household sundries, and it remains a working mixed wholesale and retail trading street.
As the historic sea gateway to the Two Holy Mosques, Jeddah's old city has long supplied pilgrims and Red Sea re-export trade, drawing fabric, ready-wear, spice and general-goods wholesalers. For Chinese textile, apparel, daily-goods and gift exporters, it is a classic street for meeting traditional traders in Saudi Arabia's western market. Parts of Al-Balad are under staged government restoration, but the souq's shops remain open for business.
