Peliyagoda Central Fish Market, on Colombo's outskirts, was built around 2011 when the old Pettah fish market relocated, and is Sri Lanka's only national wholesale fish market. Government audit records show about 154 wholesale stalls in the wholesale complex and 128 retail stores, with around 350,000 kg of fish reaching the market daily (historical figures to be verified). The complex was partly funded by the Asian Development Bank and replaced the older Pettah fish wholesale sheds.
The market centralises bulk auction and wholesale of the island's coastal catch, where seafood exporters, restaurant chains and fishmongers bid for lots. For Chinese companies in seafood processing, frozen foods, fishery equipment and cold-chain logistics, it offers a direct view of Sri Lanka's fish distribution system and contacts with seafood import and processing traders, both for chilled and frozen product lines.
