Gaziantep's historic bazaar complex lies in the old city's Sahinbey district and grew out of as many as 31 historical caravanserais (hans), several covered bedestens and the coppersmiths' market (Bakırcılar Carsisi). The city has been a major trading post of southeastern Anatolia for centuries, and copper crafts, textile wholesale, spices, dried goods and kutnu silk trade remain active and profitable today.
Gaziantep is a Turkish textile export stronghold, and the Sahinbey area around the old city is dense with garment and underwear wholesalers, alongside sizable trade in carpets, copperware and pistachio dried goods. For Chinese exporters of textiles, apparel, dried foods and craft gifts, it is a specialist market connecting southeastern Anatolian manufacturing with Middle Eastern border trade routes throughout the year.
