Kemeraltı, in Izmir's Konak district, is the most important historic commercial quarter of the Aegean region. Anafartalar Avenue curves from Mezarlıkbaşı down to Konak Square, lined with spice and dried-nut shops, textile and underwear stores, kitchenware and hardware shops, jewelers and everyday retailers. It remains Izmir's largest daily shopping and traditional wholesale center, busy from morning to evening throughout the week.
As the trading heart of an Aegean port city, Kemeraltı mixes wholesale and retail; around Kestanepazarı the spice, herbal-goods and textile wholesalers are especially dense, supplying city retailers and buyers from smaller surrounding towns. For Chinese textile, spice-food and general-goods exporters, it is the traditional wholesale gateway to Turkey's western Aegean market, conveniently close to Izmir's port for onward shipping.
