The Toy District is a twelve-block area in eastern downtown Los Angeles that gathered toy, gift and party-goods wholesalers from the late twentieth century onward. At its peak it housed roughly five hundred related businesses, though the exact figure has yet to be confirmed. Some large wholesalers have since moved out or shrunk, but nearly two hundred shops selling toys, party supplies, small electronics and daily goods still operate here, mainly serving discount stores and event buyers across the southwestern United States.
The district focuses on toys, party and festival supplies, candy and sundries, small electronics and novelties, wholesaling mainly to dollar stores, discount chains and party-supply shops. For Chinese export manufacturers, it provides a direct window into the low-price gift and seasonal-products market in the United States, and a place to meet importers and chain purchasing agents. Many buyers are regional importers who also supply smaller towns, so a visit reveals which toy and novelty categories sell well at low price points across the American interior.
