New York Garment District (Fashion Avenue)

The Garment District occupies the blocks around Seventh Avenue, known locally as Fashion Avenue, between 34th and 41st Streets in Midtown Manhattan. From the 1920s onward it drew garment factories, pattern rooms and showrooms, and at its peak a large share of American apparel was designed and produced here. Although much manufacturing has moved away, the district still hosts apparel showrooms, fabric and trim wholesalers and sourcing agents, making it the main wholesale fashion sourcing neighborhood in the northeastern United States. The current number of active wholesale showrooms has yet to be confirmed.

The district focuses on ready-to-wear apparel, fabrics, buttons, zippers and other trims, plus sample-making and private-label services, serving brand buyers, department-store sourcing staff and regional distributors across the United States. For Chinese export manufacturers, it is a place to present own designs, connect with North American brand owners and buying offices, and study pricing and trend direction in the mid-range American apparel market.
