Opened on 15 October 1984, the Mercado Central de Buenos Aires sits on a 530-hectare site in Tapiales, La Matanza, within the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. It runs twelve main pavilions with around 900 wholesale stalls, moves about 106,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables per month, and is Argentina's most important food distribution centre — an estimated quarter of the country's population depends on its supplies. Some 700 lorries enter daily and 30,000–35,000 visitors circulate on site.
The market is Argentina's benchmark fresh-produce wholesale hub, where vegetable and fruit prices for the domestic market are formed. Chinese exporters of food machinery, cold-chain and storage equipment, packaging and agricultural-trading services can study the Buenos Aires hospitality and retail supply chain here. Trading is lorry-scale and peaks on weekday early mornings; business visitors should arrange access in advance through the market's official channels.
