Inaugurated on 20 July 1972, Corabastos (Corporación de Abastos de Bogotá) is Colombia's national mixed-economy wholesale food corporation, linked to the Ministry of Agriculture. Its 420,000-square-metre site holds 57 warehouses for food sales and storage, cold chambers, freezing rooms and a rapid-freezing tunnel. It sets reference prices for staple agri-food products, publishes a daily price bulletin, and operates almost year-round, closing only on a few holidays.
Corabastos is the hub of Colombia's food distribution chain for grains, fruit, vegetables, dairy, fish and packaged groceries. Chinese exporters of food-processing and cold-chain machinery, packaging, and agricultural traders can use its official daily price bulletin to study market conditions before approaching importer-distributors. The district tourism institute has also developed a visitor corridor around the market, which helps business visitors arrange guided access to the wholesale zones.
