El Hueco (the hole) is Medellín's largest commercial district, covering roughly 23 blocks in the Guayaquil sector of La Candelaria, bounded by Avenida Colombia, Avenida San Juan, Carrera Bolívar and Avenida del Ferrocarril. Local guides describe it as a maze of more than 5,000 shops inside 84 interconnected commercial centres stitched together by 66 passageways, with an estimated million visitors a day (figures to be verified). Commerce here predates 1889; the present cluster took shape in the 1990s. Metro San Antonio station is the entrance.
The district wholesales school supplies, uniforms, sportswear, shoes, baby clothes, fabrics, kitchenware, perfume, jewellery and holiday goods to small businesses across the region. For Chinese exporters of daily-use products, stationery, toys and beauty accessories, El Hueco is a high-velocity Colombian channel. Most shops are cash-only, Sundays are nearly dead, and weekday mornings are best; bargaining is expected, and foreign accents usually trigger higher starting prices.
