Kappabashi Dogu-gai lies in Taito Ward, halfway between Asakusa and Ueno, and merchants have gathered there since around 1912. The roughly 800-meter street holds more than 170 specialist shops selling kitchen knives, tableware, bakery equipment, shop signage and plastic food samples. It is Japan's largest wholesale street for restaurant equipment and supplies, serving opening restaurants nationwide. The merchants' association keeps most shops as narrow specialists rather than general stores, each focusing on knives, tableware or bakery equipment.
The street wholesales kitchen equipment, tableware, bakery tools and store supplies to Japanese restaurant chains, independent owners and shop-fitters. For Chinese makers of kitchenware, small appliances and home goods, it is a specialized market with direct access to Japan's food-service wholesale channel, where durability and after-sales service expectations are high. Buyers often purchase sample quantities first before placing repeat orders, so small trial shipments are common.
