How to determine a safe NPSH margin based on NPSHa and NPSHr when selecting a centrifugal pump?
• Conclusion: NPSHa must exceed NPSHr; for clean water keep margin ≥0.5–1.0 m.
• Per HI 9.6.1, use 1.1–1.5x margin when NPSHr≤3 m and 1.1–1.3x when >3 m.
• For near-boiling or gassy fluids, require NPSHa ≥1.3x NPSHr plus 0.6 m.
• Calculate NPSHa at maximum flow with suction line losses, not only at rated point.
• If margin is insufficient, reduce speed or enlarge suction pipe to prevent impeller cavitation.
