Watt density for commercial heating elements should not be set by choosing a power rating first; it must be derived from the medium, flow rate, allowable sheath temperature and cleaning cycle. At the same wattage, a shorter or thinner element has a higher actual watt density and greater scaling or coking risk. For hard water, sugar or oil-based liquids, choose a lower value and leave margin for thermostat and dry-run protection; ensure proper immersion depth and flow during installation to avoid local stagnation and overheating. Ask the supplier for the design basis and allowable sheath temperature, then verify measured current, sheath temperature and fouling interval after startup, adjusting element length or quantity if deviation is large.
