How should SSR control be specified for commercial heating elements?
When specifying an SSR for a commercial heating element, first establish its rating from steady-state current, start-up inrush, ambient temperature and switching frequency, then derate for the actual enclosure airflow and fit an adequate heatsink with proper thermal interface. Sheath temperature, load type and cycling rate set the margin, and inductive or frequently switched duty calls for extra headroom. Verify power, sheath material and diameter, surface load and ingress protection against the machine, and record mounting, wiring cross-section, terminal torque and sensor location on the drawing. At acceptance, measure SSR temperature rise, sheath temperature and current waveform; having no mechanical contacts does not excuse skipping thermal verification. The supplier should confirm these values.
