Namdaemun Market is in Jung-gu, central Seoul. Though formally established in 1964, its history reaches back to the Joseon period, and it is Korea's largest and oldest comprehensive traditional market, with more than ten thousand shops and stalls by official count. It trades in clothing, children's wear, food ingredients, eyewear, handicrafts and souvenirs, combining wholesale and retail. The market is a maze of covered alleys and multi-level buildings, and many shops buy from wholesale importers at dawn before opening to walk-in customers.
As a general wholesale market, it covers apparel, daily sundries, food ingredients and tourist goods, serving Korean retailers, restaurants and foreign visitors. For Chinese export manufacturers, it is a place to study the product mix and restocking rhythms of Korea's traditional wholesale market, and to meet importers of low-price household goods. Many shops specialize in a single category, so buyers can tour several related wholesalers within a short walk.
